Double Peace Signs Indicate Jokowi's Family Getting Bold
So, everyone knew about the connection between President Jokowi's family and the PDI Perjuangan party. Their long-standing alliance has conquered the Indonesian political scene, helping Jokowi become a two-term President with the support of Megawati's party. As the 2024 elections approach, the Indonesian public is taken aback by the maneuvers of Jokowi's family. Everyone, from Jokowi to Gibran, Boby Nasution, and even Kaesang Pangarep, is distancing themselves from the bull party.
Initially, their moves were hush-hush, but over time, they've become more apparent and even bolder. Recent events further strengthen the belief that Jokowi's family is confidently taking a stance opposite to the party that has supported them all this while.
Not long ago, President Jokowi stated that the President is allowed to campaign and take sides. He said this while standing next to Prabowo Subianto, the presidential candidate number 02. It's like Jokowi wanted to emphasize that he supports candidate number 02.
Then there's the double peace sign, which was initially a bit mysterious. The question about the double peace sign from inside Indonesia's presidential car 1 was initially unanswered. It remains a mystery who's flashing the double peace sign, a pose identified with the presidential and vice-presidential candidates number 2, Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka.
This two-finger pose was captured in a viral video on social media recently. The video initially shows the presidential convoy passing through a street. On both sides of the road, people line up shouting the names of the presidential and vice-presidential candidates number 3, Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD. Some even throw up the "metal salute" with three fingers, the signature Ganjar and PDI Perjuangan gesture.
Behind the security forces, the presidential car is visible. The black Mercedes sedan is equipped with a red plate saying "Indonesia 1" and a small Indonesian flag at the front.
As the car passes through the crowd, the back window opens. Someone on the left side of the back seat throws up the double peace sign. The person isn't clear, but you can see them wearing a white shirt in the video.
It's believed that this event in the video occurred when President Jokowi and First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo were on a working visit to Salatiga, Central Java, on Tuesday, January 23, 2024.
Regardless of who's posing with the two fingers from inside the RI-1 car, the 2017 Election Law actually allows the president, vice president, as well as state and regional officials, to be involved in election campaigns.
Public speculation suggests that the person in Jokowi's car throwing up the peace signs is the First Lady, Iriana Joko Widodo. There are no restrictions regarding campaigning by the First Lady since she isn't a public official like the President and ministers. So, there are no rules against it.
Despite the controversy over the double peace signs, the public is getting more aware that Jokowi's family is becoming bolder in showing their support for one of the presidential candidates.
